Current Projects:

ARGANS Limited: a UoP linked company based in Plymouth, which works within all the phases of Earth Observation missions (system requirements; analysis and ground segment design, mission operation) www.argans.co.uk

esa3 ENVISAT-AO. Monitoring of the UK Coastal Zone using field studies, numerical modelling and remote sensing: the prediction of pollutant fluxes and environment vulnerability. Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

esa2 ERS3-A0. An investigation of coastal processes using an integration of SAR data, ground based video and ocean colour imagery. Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

esaCHRIS-AO. High spatial resolution satellite remote sensing of the Western English Channel. Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

gloThe ESA DUP GlobCOLOUR project is working towards the development of a 10-year global ocean colour data set by merging together information from four satellite sensors: SeaWiFS, MODIS/AQUA, MERIS and Parasol/POLDER.  Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details. new

seabedSeaBed: A collaboration of multidisciplinary research programmes which share the common objective of a better understanding of the seabeds of coastal waters and the physical, geological and biological processes that take place there, through the use of remote observation and measurement techniques. Includes the development of ABISS (benthic autonomous image scaling system).

SafeNav is an investigation of the factors affecting safe navigation in the vicinity of proposed wave energy devices.   It will investigate existing, new and developing mitigation methods, with an ultimate aim of recommending navigation methods suitable for the site.  It is expected that the process developed, to reach these proposals, will be transferable to other navigation hazards.

Completed Projects:

amt_logo.gif (1982 bytes) NERC Consortium funded Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme: AMT Satellite Ocean Colour Imagery.

bnsc Government Information From The Space Sector (GIFTSS) Initative: The application of Earth Observation (EO) and GIS methods for identifying positions and time-dynamics of low-water channels in Morecambe Bay.  Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

coastchart. The ESA DUP COASTCHART project aimed to provide hydrographic offices with a system that allows standard navigation charts to be updated with accurate coastline information derived from space-based observations Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

Exploration Consultants. Real-time GPS quality assurance. An investigation into the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques. Supported by the Teaching Company Scheme. Contact Dr Victor Abbott [V.Abbott@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

casixNERC funded Centre for observation of Air-Sea Interactions and fluXes (CASIX): Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

nerc2High spatial resolution airborne remote sensing of suspended particulate matter in the River Tamar. Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

nercHyperspectral investigations of optically active estuarine and coastal suspended material. Contact Dr Sam Lavender [S.Lavender@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

wrics2 Watershed Reef Interconnectivity Scientific Study (WRIScS), Belize: A Pilot study of the use of satellite Ocean Colour Imagery for Water Quality Monitoring in Optically Shallow Tropical Coastal Environments.

Westland GeoProjects: A Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) aided, Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Project to improve on the detection of cetaceans (marine mammals) especially to diminish effects from the hydrocarbon exploration industry.  Contact Dr Victor Abbott [vabbott@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.

United Kingdom Hydrographic Office: A UKHO funded, six month study, to investigate the future of the paper chart, with reference to modern visualisation systems.  Contact Dr Victor Abbott [vabbott@plymouth.ac.uk] for more details.
