Geomatics Graduate Programmes
The University has its roots in navigation education, but more particularly, ran a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrographic Surveying for twenty seven years. This course had an international reputation and accreditation from both the UK surveying professional institution (the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) and from an international body (a joint board from the International Hydrographic Office and the Federation Internationale Geometres). The academic team has recently developed the MSc Hydrography to replace the Postgraduate Diploma, having run both programmes in parallel for four years. The Diploma ceased in July 2000 and the latest version of the MSc Hydrography commenced in September 2000. Improvements include the strengthening of the fieldwork arrangements and the strengthening of the research skills and methods modules. In September 2002 a MRes Geomatics started.
A wide range of opportunities exist for research into many aspects of geomatics. Facilities are available ashore, afloat and within industry. We invite enquiries and applications from persons with an interest in studying for either a Masters Degree by Study (MSc), Masters Degree by Research (MRes) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
The Faculty of Science has PhD students and runs the MSc/MRes in Environmental and Marine Science (EMS) inter-departmental programme which has the following relevant pathways (roadmaps give the course outline and possible module choices):
