Ocean Colour Special Interest Group

Index

The Ocean Colour SIG is jointly affiliated to the
Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society
(RSPSoc) and the Challenger Society for Marine
Science (CSMS) , and aims to provide a UK focus for ocean colour research
users that enables them to easy exchange relevant information. This is
undertaken through:
- co-ordinated research meetings, workshops and symposia;
- a moderated mail list to distribute information of interest to the community
- WWW pages with links to ocean colour users own sites, international data
providers and UK processing centres.
We are interested in hearing from the community of any other services or facilities
which could be provided through these pages.

- The first meeting of the Ocean Colour Affiliated Group was held (on Friday 11 September
98) at The Challenger Society UK Oceanography 98 (7 - 11 September 1998). This covered all
aspects of ocean colour and optical oceanography and there are minutes
available.
- The second meeting of the Ocean Colour Affiliated Group was held at UK
Marine Science 2000 (10 - 16 September 2000) and covered all aspects of ocean colour.
- One-day Symposium: Sensing and Mapping the Marine Environment from near and far.
This interesting and varied one-day symposium was held at The Geological
Society on Wednesday 16 July 2003. In a new venture, presentations were brought together
for the Ocean Colour SIG together with the broader marine remote sensing interests of The
Challenger Society for Marine Science (CSMS) and RSPSoc. It was supported with an
exhibition and poster displays in the coffee area and ten scientific presentations.
A PDF document containing the programme and abstracts is available at: SMap03-abstracts.pdf
- One-day Symposium: Sensing and Mapping the Marine Environment
2, held at
The Institute of Physics on Tuesday 05 April 2005.
- One-day Symposium: Sensing and Mapping the Marine Environment
3, held at
The Geological Society on Monday 16 July 2007.
- Hydrological Optics 2008, held at
The Institute of Physics on Friday 28 March 2008. A PDF document containing the abstracts is available at: hydrological-optics-2008-abstracts.pdf

- 6-10 October 2008, Ocean Optics XIX, Il Ciocco, Tuscany, Italy [01 June 2008abstract deadline].

For a more complete list of past/present future sensors have a look at the
IOCCG sensor pages.
Some sensors of particular relevance to European Ocean Colour remote sensing
are:
- Modular Optoelectronic Scanner (MOS) was a
spaceborne imaging spectrometer designed and built by the DLR in Berlin. In March 1996 the Indian IRS-P3
spacecraft was successfully launched and it provided ocean colour imagery
until May 2004.
- Ocean Colour
and Temperature Scanner (OCTS) was launched on the 17th August 1996 and provided
global ocean colour data until the 30th June 1997 when there was a loss of power.
Data can be obtained via the NASA
OceanColor Web
- The SeaWiFS sensor was launched
on the 1st August 1997 and started to provide global ocean colour data on the 16th
September 1997. See the
NASA OceanColor Web for
global coverage data.
- The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer
(MODIS) was launched on the Terra satellite on 18 December 1999 and Aqua
satellite on 04 May 2002. For
global coverage data can be obtained via the
NASA OceanColor Web.
- The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) was launched on the ENVISAT satellite on 01 March 2002.
Level 1 and level 2 data (individual satellite acquisitions) needs to be
applied for via a
Category-1 (Scientific) proposal. Level 3 products are available at http://envisat.esa.int/level3/meris/.
- See the NEODAAS www site for more information on accessing imagery collected over the UK.
- Merged (MERIS, MODIS and SeaWiFS) Level 3 (global) products are freely
available via the
GlobColour WWW site.

The group has a JISCMAIL mailing list (ocean-colour) which will be
used to facilitate the communication of information between group members, not only to
inform members of conferences etc., but also to discuss current scientific issues. For
details on how to join the ocean-colour mailing list please click here.
There is also a JISCMAIL mailing list (geomatics) which provides a
forum for the discussion of geomatics and a method of distributing information e.g.
conferences. For details on how to join the geomatics mailing list please click here.
