The judges were impressed by
their ability to combine academically rigorous study with
rare communicative skills which allow the public – through
their work for media outlets such as ITN, Sky and the Sunday
Times - to make sense of electoral change. In
1985 they established a research centre - now sponsored by
the Local Government Chronicle - which monitors local
elections results in England and Wales. They conduct
research for bodies such as the Electoral Commission and the
Local Government Association and regular present to, among
others, politicians, civil servants and local government
