A new £18 million marine building is under construction on the University of Plymouth's city campus, housing state-of-the-art research facilities including new wave tank testing equipment that will be unique in the UK. Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Plymouth, said: “Our marine and maritime research has now achieved world-class recognition and status, so it is fitting that Plymouth should be the location for this world-leading facility.

The CERG has been awarded a research grant to host a visiting post-doctoral researcher - Dr Xiaojing Geng from Tsinghua University, one of the top universities in China, to conduct a join research project at Plymouth for 3 months. The project, led by Dr Shunqi Pan, is supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering under the Research Exchanges with China and India - major awards, to establish a research framework on "Modelling the impact of climate change on microclimate system of coastal zones". |
ICCE 2010 - Shanghai, China (07/2010) A delegate from the CERG attended the 32nd International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE2010) held in Shanghai, China from 30 June to 5 July 2010. 5 Papers and 1 poster were presented at the conference. The conference provided an excellent platform for future research exchanges and collaborations between the group and world-leading researchers in coastal engineering. |
Samoa Tsunami (11/2009) Alison Hunt-Raby is Principal Investigator on a recently awarded EPSRC grant which funded a team of engineers to conduct a post-tsunami survey in Western Samoa from the South Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami of 29 September 2009. The team worked under the auspices of the Earthquake Engineers Field Investigation Team who have been conducting damage assessments for 26 years. On Tuesday 24 November 2009 the EEFIT mission team that has recently returned from the Western Samoa Islands will present their preliminary findings on the South Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami of 29 September 2009. The meeting will be held at the Institution of Structural Engineers and commences at 6pm. Seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, no registration is required. Tea and biscuits will be available from 5.30pm. Please forward this flyer to anyone who may be interested. EEFIT sent a separate mission team to Sumatra and they expect to present their preliminary findings in the near future, possibly at the above mentioned meeting on 24 November. |

The Group is pleased to announce the extension of the Flood Risk Management Research Consortium for further 4 years. Dr J Horrillo-Caraballo will be continuing his research under this project.
The Group is pleased to announce the recent arrival of Dr Xin Lv to CERG. He is working on our EPIRUS project, funded by NERC through their FREE (Flood Risk under Extreme Events) Programme.
Dr John Lawrence has joined The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Ltd to take up a hydrodynamicist appoinment. We wish him well in his new position.
Dr Baoxing Wang has joined ABPMER Ltd. We wish him well in his new appointment.
Members of CERG recently put their knowledge of hydrodynamics to the test in a canoeing expedition of the tidal Tamar River in Cornwall.
